How to give a discount on MRP in Shopify
In Shopify, the MRP usually lives in the "compare-at price" field. A normal discount code ignores it. Here is why, and how to fix it.
Why a normal code does not use the MRP
Shopify works out a percentage code on the price the customer is charged, which is your sale price. The compare-at price is only shown as a struck-through number. So "40% off" means 40% off the sale price.
The manual ways, and their cost
- Remove the sale price before the sale. Works, but you edit every product twice.
- Lower the code's percentage by hand. You do a sum for each product, and it is wrong when prices differ.
- Custom checkout scripts. Needs a developer and upkeep.
The simple way: a code that reads the MRP
- Install MRP Discount from the Shopify App Store.
- Open the MRP Discount app in your Shopify admin and choose Create discount.
- Type the code and the percentage off the compare-at price.
- Choose all eligible products, specific products or specific collections.
- Add a minimum purchase, usage limit or dates if you need them. Save.
- The code now shows in Shopify's Discounts page, next to your other codes.
At checkout, the customer enters the code and pays the MRP minus your percentage.
Check it yourself
Add one product to the cart, apply the code, and compare the total with MRP × (1 − your percentage). They should match.
Run your next sale on the MRP.
Install it, make one code, and check it in your own checkout. The first 7 days are free.
